Country context
In northern Mozambique, the province of Cabo Delgado has been affected by an armed conflict since 2017. The districts primarily impacted are those in the northeast and along the coastal fringe, including Mocimboa da Praia, Palma, and Nangade.
These attacks have caused significant material damage, but more importantly, human losses. According to official information, over 2,000 people have been killed, and more than 700,000 individuals have had to leave their original regions to seek refuge in other areas further east or south of the affected regions.
As of April 3, 2021, more than 10,400 people had already arrived in the districts of Montepuez, Mueda, Nanagade, and Pemba. Approximately 44% of these displaced and registered individuals settled in Mueda. This flow has not ceased.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimates that the conflict has displaced 350,000 children, with over 17,000 of them displaced due to the attack on Palma. Hundreds of children arrive and continue to arrive in 2023, traumatized and exhausted after being separated from their families.
With the humanitarian degradation in Mozambique, Solinfo conducted exploratory missions from June 2021 to better understand the needs of the populations and identify a local partner with whom to initiate development aid activities.
The choice of partner fell on a local NGO, “Kulima,” founded by a former Italian missionary thirty years ago during Mozambique’s civil war. Kulima is present in the majority of Mozambique’s provinces, is accustomed to foreign partnerships, and specializes in agriculture and education.
In partnership with Kulima, Solinfo developed two distinct activities in two provinces of Mozambique: one activity in the Nampula province and another in the Cabo Delgado province (where the insurgency is taking place).
In Nampula, especially in the vicinity of the city of Angoche, Solinfo worked with fishermen and farmers by training hundreds of people in savings and rotating micro-credit to enable them to develop new income-generating activities that are not weather-dependent. After a year of training and support, this activity was concluded in July 2022 due to insufficient funds.
SOLINFO and KULIMA refocused on establishing psychosocial support workshops (AP) for internally displaced children in the resettlement center in the city of Mueda in the Mueda district of the Cabo Delgado province.
In Cabo Delgado, Solinfo is located in Mueda in a displaced camp and has developed a dual activity: academic support/literacy and psychosocial support for vulnerable children in the area.
In June 2022, Solinfo organized a 5-day training on psychosocial support for local government members, community leaders, and teachers (25 people in total). Albane Buriel, an external consultant in psychosocial support, came to Mozambique to lead the training.
During this training, two facilitators, Elias and Rosa, were trained. One is from the village of Mueda, and the other is from the displaced camp adjacent to the village. They were selected based on their pedagogical knowledge and experience working with children. The selection process was coordinated with community leaders and various administrative services in the Mueda district that interact with children and youth (education, health, and social services).
Our goal is to organize psychosocial support activities through artistic mediation and recreational activities for children aged 6 to 12 within an inclusive and integrated approach. The activities take place six times a week, every afternoon for 2 hours after school, and on Saturday mornings for 4 hours. Children are divided into several groups, supervised by a facilitator and a psychosocial support-trained assistant.
The selection of beneficiaries is done in consultation and coordination with community leaders and administrative services in the Mueda district.
The mission was financially reinforced and strengthened at the end of the first year of operation in 2023.
This project is funded from Solinfo’s own funds without external donors.
As part of the partnership with Kulima, this local association bears part of the expenses, especially those related to management and follow-up by the Regional Manager, as well as administrative expenses related to this monitoring.
Depending on the evolving situation and the extent of needs that may change, we will study the necessity of reinforcing our action by establishing partnerships with French or international institutions that may wish to invest in this region and this type of action.
