Country context
The Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, a large West African country, is home to nearly 30 million people, with its economic center located in Abidjan, a metropolis with a population of 5 million. In the center of the country lies the capital, Yamoussoukro, on the northern route. This distant north, already afflicted by the woes of past civil war, is now facing jihadist threats and the consequences of informal economy, giving rise to criminal activities.
Recently, movements of refugees from Mali and Burkina Faso have further strained the demographic balance in the north. The porosity of the socio-security context and the development of the informal economy increase the risk of school dropout among young people, whose literacy rate is already only 20%.
Since 2021, Solinfo, in partnership with two Ivorian NGOs, Les Flamboyants and AJV-CI, has been developing and supporting the “Alpha Couture” project. This initiative aims to promote the social integration and financial autonomy of young girls in precarious situations through access to professional and qualifying training.
By facilitating the acquisition of knowledge and technical skills, Alpha Couture contributes to the social and community reintegration of young girls through engaging in income-generating activities, all while promoting their satisfaction and personal fulfillment.
The Alpha Couture project allows the entire community to progress and divert some of its members from the temptation to engage or collaborate in illegal activities.
The objectives of this training include:
This 18-month training program alternates between literacy classes and professional sewing training, with a daily schedule of four hours for 30 young girls aged 10 to 16 years.
The courses include an introduction to running a craft business (accounting, management) and cover topics related to prevention (health, hygiene). The training concludes with an internship with master tailors in the villages. Sewing remains an essential activity in the villages and fulfills a basic need in the communities.
Upon establishing themselves, the young girls, after a few months of activity and evaluation, receive a sewing machine. They are mentored by a local mentor.
The Flamboyants is an Ivorian NGO active in many localities in the northern part of Côte d’Ivoire.
Its leader and founder, Jacques Krako-Kobenan, seeks to develop programs to improve the living conditions of communities, particularly for women and children.
AJV-CI (Association des Jeunes Visionnaires – Côte d’Ivoire) was founded by Mr. Elvis Ibrahim KABLA.
Based in Abidjan, its mission is to support citizen initiatives to strengthen the resilience of communities.
