Kurdish Iraq - Youth Express Program

Country context

The populations of northern Iraq have experienced tragic and violent events in their ancient and recent history. Villages have sometimes been destroyed seven times in the last 40 years, with refugee movements affecting half of the population occurring on the Iranian and Turkish borders.

Since 1991, Northern Iraq has been administered by the Kurdistan Regional Government, with its own president, government, and autonomous administration.

Today, the region has experienced significant economic and social development and enjoys relative stability, although threatened by the geopolitical movements in the region and the neighboring war. The Kurdistan Region of Iraq has nearly 5 million inhabitants (20% of the Iraqi population), including the majority Kurds and various minority communities such as Yazidis and Christians living in harmony.

Supervisors & Psychologists

Since 2018, through artistic mediation, Solinfo provides incarcerated minors in a detention center in Erbil with a rewarding environment for listening where they practice Art Therapy under the supervision of psychologists. Young detainees are often forgotten by society and major humanitarian programs. Through these sessions of artistic mediation, Solinfo allows incarcerated minors to initiate a process of personal development and strengthen their resilience and expression, facilitating their future integration into society.

Solinfo supports a team of psychologists who lead regular workshops. A session can accommodate up to 30 incarcerated minors. The two-hour session begins with a time of sharing and continues with an artistic session under the observation and participation of a psychologist. This program aims to allow the minor to express themselves, release their emotions, encourage them to translate it through their hands and minds into an artistic gesture,

And thus:

  • Encourage and support artistic production in a detention setting
  • Promote literary expression and enable speaking in a trusting environment
  • Raise awareness of children’s rights and freedom of expression
  • Exhibit the created works and invite young detainees to present them

This helps the youth gain confidence and express their aspirations, making it easier for them to find their place within the group and ultimately leading to better integration into society upon their release from detention.

A project is currently under consideration in an orphanage.
